Chapter 9 – Contact

I made it to Rachel's office a little later that day. There was an entire wing added to the palace for her work. My moms insisted since my contrary bride was royalty now. Her office overlooked a large warehouse where the grounds of the archaeological dig was being excavated and reproduced here in painstaking detail.

The problem I saw was the holographic representations projected on the five percent still being excavated. I had never known that unearthing all this history took so much time to do right. I should have known when she had told me when we met, that she had been at it one hundred years. Plus when she was given all the help she needed from historical preservation societies from all the worlds, I learned she had taken a few... shortcuts.

At the rate they were going, they wouldn't complete their work before the enemy vessels arrived in the system. They'd have to make some hard decisions before that happens. I watched the people at the dig site in the hologram, meticulously sifting through everything a literal inch at a time.

The priority from day one was to retrieve all the bodies from their tombs and see if any could be identified by the mass of journals the linguistics experts and programs have been translating. And I'm proud to say that all agree Rachel had translated the journal she had worked on almost perfectly, and because of that, they were able to build a lexicon to decipher the rest. Knowledge of my ancestors and their culture has grown exponentially because of her find.

I smirked and stepped to the side as soon as I entered, both feeling the hidden amusement and anticipating the attack as little Kena dropped from being suspended somehow above the door, to land hard on the floor, her lattice flaring and absorbing most of it. She grinned up at me. “Ow.” Then she stood.

Kroth, we wouldn't be able to call her little Kena much longer. It was already a given, that with Asgard and Ragnarok parents, she would wind up taller than most women, though short for a Ragnarok like Brunhilde was. Though she looked physically about eleven now, she was only three inches shorter than me.

We did the double hand slap, fist bump that was spreading through the younger generation. She thought it was so ummm... what was the Earth word she was using all the time? Oh yeah, so 'cool' that she didn't have to show it to me. But I pretty much didn't have a choice, her Verr were like mine, evolved from the Three Embers, so were looking for their own sub-net. Her silly Verr picked me since we were the closest in age.

I thought I had known the sensory sharing between the Embers that freaked some people out, as they worked almost as a hivemind at times since I shared that with them... but not to this extent. Now I realize that I was just on the fringe of that connection.
